The aim of this collection of thirty seven poems is to share my experience of the ups and downs of family life – that there is no one right way to do things and our emotions are not always what we would consider good ones. They are based on my own personal experience as a parent of three children (now in their late teens and early twenties) and from my experience of supporting other parents.
It has been a privilege and an honour to be invited to share their struggles and support them through their big emotions; the happiness, sadness, anger and laughter and all the other emotions that come with raising a family.
From parent to child: an honesty that we can’t always get things right but we are trying, and our love is constant. From child to parent: a message of trust, gratitude and a need (plead) for guidance (even if it is not always immediately appreciated).
My hope with these poems is that parents won’t feel so alone with their emotions, behaviours or attitudes. That I might inspire them to keep going no matter what difficulties they face or how deep the emotions they might be experiencing. Perhaps to see the lighter side of life and occasionally add a little glitter. Hopefully to realise that it is normal and natural to have big emotions at times.
Each poem is a slightly different take on an aspect of family life. Some are funny, some are sad, but hopefully all are inspirational and thought-provoking. A few have been penned by children and others by my clients, but most of them have been written by me.
